AI Arrives in the Laboratory
While still in its infancy, AI has begun to make its mark on our industry as lab owners discover how this emerging technology can achieve more predictable outcomes and save production time and labor.
Early adopters are using AI-based software such as CADflow for automatic bracket removal and model basing for orthodontic labs; margin marking using Pearl’s Smart Margin and Scan Clarity Score; and automatically cleaning STL data and nesting files with Oqton. They’re also taking advantage of the growing number of AI-based outsourcing services for crown and nightguard design.
Since AI can free up technicians to work on more sophisticated work, the technology is especially promising in light of the ongoing struggle to find qualified technicians. And, since AI technology is continuously being “taught” by the user, it’s always improving, offering even greater potential for the future.
